The specialty of integrated traditional and western medicine for menopathy is affiliated to department of integrated traditional and western medicine in Gynecology and Obstetrics Hospital of Fudan University in Shanghai. It was founded by many famous experts, such as Tang jifu, Li chaojing and Yu jin, who initially proposed that kidney is in charge of reproduction. According to this theory, the regulation of female reproduction in a combined way was widely recognized and applied over the country. They did not only make tremendous contribution to the development of the integrated medicine, but also promoted our department to be distinct in our hospital. In 1994, Professor Yu jin sponsored the center of integrated traditional and western medicine for menopathy and the subject of integrated traditional and western medicine for gynecology in Shanghai. The specialty of integrated traditional and western medicine for menopathy was officially established in 2004, directed by famous Professor Gui suiqi.

Over decades, this specialty fully plays out the advantages of the traditional medicine, fusing it into the clinical applyings and basic researches, and overcome numerous rare illnesses in the field of Obstetrics and Gynecology. It manifests its unique effect, compared with merely traditional or western medicine or acupucture, especially on menopathy caused by endocrinal dysfunction, such as adolescent dysfunctional bleeding, polycystic ovary syndrome, menorrhage or hypomenorrhea, luteal phase defect, hyperlactinemia, amenorrhea, menopausal syndrome, recurrent spontaneous abortion, inferlity, stimulated ovulation via acupucture. We also spare no effort to establish the manul for the diagnosis and treatment with integrated traditional and western medicine, to unravel the mechanism under the effects of herbs and acupucture, to demonstrate the regulation network of herbs and acupucture on female reproductive-neural-immunal-metablic network, to enfore the advantage of traditional medicine. It turns out to be initialtive and progressive. Lots of patients domestically and internationally attracted by our specialty every year. So far, we have established the cooperation with Columbia University in USA and clinical center in Italy, and been placed on the project of applicable techniques of Board of Health in Shanghai. We have organized classes to carry forward our academical thinkings and technical outcomes 16 times domestically. During the past one decade, we have been supported by NIH, The National Natural Science Fund, municipal funds for more than 30 times, got the national or municipal prize for technology for 14 times and patents for 3 times, discovered two new drugs and published more than 200 articles. All of the above perfectly illuminate our leading role in the field of integrated traditional and western medicine. Owing to the platform created by national “211” project and municipal contruction project of traditional medicine, we are confident to broaden our influence internationlly, and to promote the persistent development of our specialty.
