The department of Anesthesiology was formally established in March, 2003. The department has extensively developed such advance in personnel structure and business scope, professional knowledge and research capacity after ten years of rapid development.

The department equips many advanced anesthesia machines and equipments, such as multifunctional monitor, fibreoptic bronchoscope, visible laryngoscope, anaesthesia depth monitor, muscle relaxant monitor, blood gas analyzer, which provide comprehensive technical safeguard for perioperative safety. Scopes of business include anesthesia of inpatient and outpatient gynecology and obstetrics operations, labor analgesia, monitor and treatment of critical and emergency patients. Thus, anesthesia of laparoscope gynecology operations and high-risk obstetrics operations (especially severe pregnancy induced hypertension and preeclampsia) forms the characteristic of our department. Our department took the lead in carrying out spinal anesthesia and combined spinal-epidural anesthesia in the field of gynecology and obstetrics anesthesia in Shanghai in 2000. And combined spinal-epidural anesthesia, taking the place of epidural anesthesia, became the major way of obstetrics anesthesia in 2002, which is another feature of our department. Such replacement reduces the failure of intrathecal anesthesia, on the other hand fast acting of combined spinal-epidural anesthesia accelerates the turnover of operating room, improving the efficiency of operating room and adapting the circumstances of heavier workload of operating room. The total cases reach more than 20000per year in our department. The application of postoprative analgesia, labor anesthesia, artery and deep vein puncture indwelling catheter in invasive hemodynaniic monitoring, laryngeal mask airway, acute normovolaemic haemodilution and autogenous blood transfusion have become the normal clinical techniques. Our department also takes on the responsibility of resuscitation and respiration support to the critical patients of the hospital. Our department has accumulated a lot of experience in treatment of critical patients with hemorrhagic shock, DIC and acute pulmonary edema.

The faculty of the department is composed of 34 anesthesiologists, including 2 associate chief physicians, 13 attending physicians, 2 doctors, 23 masters. Our department has a strong climate of leaning, focus on the development and latest progress in the relative disciplines home and abroad, actively finding problems and thinking problems in clinical practice, developing clinical scientific research. The main directions of scientific research include anesthesia of laparoscope gynecology operations, anesthesia of obstetrics operations, perioperative analgesia, pharmacology of anesthetics. There have been a number of achievements in scientific research in the recent years. The cooperation of multidisciplinary and muticenter is progressing gradually. More than 30 theses have been published in domestic core journals in recent 3 years. And our department achieved a breakthrough in SCI this year.
