Our neonatal department was founded in 1991 and it has been well developed in neonatal patient care, medical research and clinical teaching with twenty years of arduous efforts. A high quility, skilled, and reasonable medical team which is consist of three associate professors, five attending doctors, four residents, and more than 20 nurses is available in daily health care. 

The department is divided into two parts locating in Huangpu and Yangpu hospital regions. There are totally 36 beds with a high standard of settings, including three NCPAP for newborns, twenty incubators including an import top grade one for premature infants, twelve intelligent radiator units for resuscitation, forty-five sets of multi-function monitor, thirty-five sets of single and dual-channel micro-injection pumps, single and double blue light phototherapy units, glucose meter, transcutaneous bilirubin meter and bedside X-ray equipment and other morden facilities. So that critically ill newborns, premature infants, very low birth weight infants, and even extra-low weight infants can receive timely and effective medical care. We were one of the first hospital carried out the new resuscitation with co-production of pediatricians or neonatal practitioners, midwife and obstetrician for asphyxia neonates in Shanghai, which reduced the incidence of complications of neonatal asphyxia remarkablely. There are bout 1,500 admissions annually, and the survival rate of critical illness is more than 95%.

A comprehensive system of rooming-in ward rounds have been established as well, which hellps us identify problems earlier in healthy newborns and these infants could receive early diagnosis and treament. Other than this, our specialists provide educations for the new mother about feeding and nursing instruction, spread the correct parenting idea. The newborn screening of phenylketonuria, congenital hypothyroidism, adrenal hyperplasia, G6PD and hearing screening has become a routinely practice to all babies born in our hospital. A follow-up clinics were established for high-risk patients to provide early intervention. All these has shown good social benefits. 

We has actively participated in national and international neonatal academic conferences. And we have also undertaken a number of research projects, such as the impact of preterm or low birth weight infant formula on early growth and development of preterm children, a multi-center clinical trials of domestic amplitude integrated EEG in newborns, a multi-center research about the causes neonatal hyperbilirunemia, et al. Several articles have been published on national medical journals.

Everyone of our neonatal department will dedicate with the concept of “effort with heart watering the flowers, love tending the life of flowers”. Every ill newborns will have aborative clinical care in our unit. Every hearlth baby will have their life flower open beautifully.
