he Obstetrics & Gynecology Hospital of Fudan University (formerly known as the Obstetrics & Gynecology Hospital of Shanghai Medical Hospital) is the first Women and Children Hospital in China. It was developed on the basis of a missionary hospital-Xi Men Women and Children Hospital which is a missionary hospital set up by an American Mrs Margarret Willianson in June 1884.The department of Obstetrics had trained many national famous obstetrician experts such as Wang Shuzhen, Zheng Huaimei, Lu Xiangyun, Wang Juhua, Gao Xiuhui, Zhang Zhenjun, Zhuang Yiliang, Pan Mingming, etc. They composed the obstetrics history together with national experts. In 1957, the department of obstetrics was established. Led by Prof. Wang Shuzhen, we spearheaded the first extraperitoneal cesarean section, established the standards for the Chinese women external pelvimetry measurement data, and edited the first textbook of Obstetrics and Gynecology in China. In 1973, our hospital organized the perinatal medicine research group and established the ward specialists to care for high-risk pregnancies. In 2004, the prenatal diagnosis center was founded, and the systematic prenatal screening and diagnosis was also launched. In April 2009, Shanghai guide center for primary prevention of birth defects was established. In Nov. 2009, the Yangpu Branch of Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital had been put into operation. 

At present, the maternity of The Obstetrics & Gynecology Hospital of Fudan University has strong technical force and established a strong academic team specialist to Maternal Fetal Medicine. The team includes academic pacesetter Prof. Li Xiaotian, academic backbone Prof. Yan Yingliu, technological backbone Prof. Cheng Haidong and etc. We are now have a total of 106 physicians, including which there are 13 chief physicians, 20 associate chief physicians, 38 attending physicians and 35 resident physicians. Among them, there are 40 Ph.D., 42 masters, 25 bachelors while 8 Doctoral tutors and 18 Master tutors. In the faculty, there are also have 178 Nursing Staff and 1 associate professor of nursing, 13 charge nurses, 69 senior nurses and 95 nurses, including 1 Master tutor in nursing staff.

The present main discipline construction directions are high-risk pregnancy and obstetrics processing, prenatal diagnosis and fetal medicine and primary prevention of birth defects including aspects: the diagnosis and treatment of pregnancy-induced hypertension disease, diagnosis and treatment of fetal monitoring and fetal distress, gestational diabetes monitoring, formulate the antimicrobial norms in perioperative period of cesarean section, obstetrics first aid, refractory disease multidisciplinary joint treatment technology, high-risk fetal ultrasound, fetal heart ultrasound screening and early pregnancy fetus malformation comprehensive screening solutions, integrated chromosome disease diagnosis technology. Meanwhile, we explored the community-based health care and consulting mode, wrote "Preconception Care Manual ", and established Shanghai guide center for primary prevention of birth defects to assist the government formulate relevant policy.

The Department of Obstetrics is also the teaching base of Fudan University, has been undertaking the education of undergraduates post graduates, doctors and post-doctor-. In recent 5 years, the research programs undertaken by our department include 2 international cooperation projects, 11 national projects, 9 ministerial projects, 15 provincial projects. More than 40 SCI papers and 135 Domestic papers have been published (incomplete statistics).In addition, we have acquired 6 Patents and 14 monographs.

Led by successive directors, the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology Hospital of Fudan University has made brilliant achievements and acquired lofty reputations throughout the hundred years of history. In the new century, the young generations will unit as one, make every effort and create a splendid future!
